 Gratitude, Praise, and Moral Luck 

In this talk I present a challenge for Strawsonian “pure quality of will” views of moral responsibility, according to which our praise- and blame-manifesting reactive attitudes are fittingly sensitive only to others’ quality of will, as manifested in their actions. While discussion of moral responsibility tends to focus on blameworthiness, I attend to the attitude that Strawsonians take to be the paradigmatic vehicle of praise—namely, gratitude—arguing that this attitude reveals our responses of praise to sometimes be fittingly sensitive to the resultantly lucky effects of others’ manifestations of good will. By directing attention to cases of positive moral luck— which I argue are invulnerable to a key objection levied against their blame-involving counterparts— I create dialectical trouble for the Strawsonian pure quality of will theorist’s wholesale opposition to resultant moral luck.
