“Time-consciousness and Individuation in Husserl”

Abstract

This talk will examine Husserl’s phenomenology of time in light of his evolving account of individuation. Broadly, individuation is the first step in the constitution of identical intentional objects that endure across manifold temporal phases and properties. Driven by an unrelenting interest in the consciousness of unities, Husserl constantly revised his notion of individuation throughout his writings on time. I will thus argue that, while initially conceived solely as a formal–ontological and epistemological issue, individuation also gradually became a crucial feature of Husserl’s conception of the stream of consciousness as both continuous and unique to each subject. Furthermore, grounding the relation between time and individuation like this offers some unexpected insights into vital phenomenological questions.

“What makes a thing a thing? The notion of ‘thing-likeness’ (Dinghaftigkeit) in
Georg Lukács’s theory of reification”

Abstract:

This talk will examine the recent renewal of theoretical interest in reification. I will argue that the current debate has developed in two directions, both of which take the philosophy of Georg Lukács as a departure point. While the first approach is concerned with an immediate application of the concept of reification, often ignoring the philosophical background of its formulation by Lukács, the second contends that it is in light of this background that the concept reveals its true meaning. I will claim that it is only by combining these perspectives that reification becomes a genuinely multilayered critical concept, capable of both historical illustration and innovative application.
